Shopping in the company of a robot

Holidays require hours of shopping. We go to the mall, we buy a lot of presents and many other things for the Christmas dinner and New Year’s Eve. We really need an assistant, someone to give us advice and help us carrying the things we buy.

Advanced Telecommunications Research Institute developed the advanced version of the Robovie II android in order to make shopping a pleasure. Before you leave home you have to put your shopping list on a mobile device. This information is wirelessly transmitted to a robot from the supermarket. When you enter the supermarket, the robot greets you. Then, it carries your shopping, verbally reads out the next item to be collected and makes suggestions for suitable additional items.

If you want to live the experience of making shopping in the company of a robot, visit the Apita Seikadai supermarket in Kyoto. Robovie II is currently being tested here, until March 2010.
