Seagate announced a 5mm thick harddrive for laptops, appropriately named the Laptop Ultrathin HDD. It’s a 2.5-inch drive that’s already shipping to Seagate’s OEM partners. It will be availalble in 320GB and 500GB capacities, in a steel case. While the usual laptop drives are typically 7mm or 9.5mm thick, this one should allow for even thinner Haswell-based laptops in the near future.
At $89 for 500GB, we should see it preferred in convential laptop builds over expensive flash-based SSD drives for a long time. However, the HDD is compatible with Android tablets as well, and it seems to be unnafected by rapid movements of the device even though it has moving parts.
However, battery life is a different case. According to Banseng Teh at Seagate, OEM’s will probably stick with some amount of onboard flash memory to improve performance.Source: CNET
