Samsung officially announces that it will launch a foldable smartphone next year

Maybe it’s just a diversion to distract people’s attention of the upcoming iPhone-s which will be unveiled today, but Samsung head of the mobile division, DJ Koh made a bold and interesting statement during a press conference in South Korea.

Koh said that Samsung will launch a foldable smartphone which will feature a bendable screen. This comes as a surprise, because a few months ago a Samsung Display official said at a tech expo in Seoul that Samsung will not launch any foldable smartphones until 2019.

He said the new smartphone will be launched under the Galaxy Note brand. That means it will be launched next summer.

“As the head of the business, I can say our current goal is next year,” he told reporters. “When we can overcome some problems for sure, we will launch the product.”

Koh’s statement might mean that Samsung has changed their strategy. As I said, it might be a diversion, but it would be unwise for Samsung to promise something and not to deliver. It’s risky!

Anyway, that will fuel even more those who claimed that Samsung will launch a bendable smartphone in 2018, long before DJ Koh’s announcement.
