HTC is still around even though for a short time we thought that Google will buy its smartphone business and the Taiwanese company would make its exit from the smartphone market.
Google will pay $1.1 billion to HTC for a part of their employees which will continue to work on developing the Pixel smartphones and non-exclusive access to HTC’s patente portfolio, but that doesn’t mean HTC can’t continue its work on the smartphone market.
In fact, following the announcement, HTC released a press release and clearly stated that it’s going to keep launching new smartphones and confirmed that its engineers are already working on a new flagship.
“This agreement also supports HTC’s continued branded smartphone strategy, enabling a more streamlined product portfolio, greater operational efficiency and financial flexibility. HTC will continue to have best-in-class engineering talent, which is currently working on the next flagship phone, following the successful launch of the HTC U11 earlier this year“, said the company in the mentioned press release.
That been said, the cash which will be infused by Google will give a little more room for the Taiwanese company to breathe and continue to develop and launch smartphones.
