Google’s Project Loon to provide wireless internet in Puerto Rico and US Virgin Islands

Google’s Project Loon has an opportunity to prove itself viable as it got FCC certification for Puerto Rico and US Virgin Islands, both unincorporated US territories.

Both areas were affected by affected by Hurricanes Irma and Maria and many areas do not have internet connections so Project Loon, which is going to provide wireless connections via balloon carrier relays, that will offer 4G LTE communications.

In the license, FCC stated that “the purpose of the [Special Temporary Authority] is to support licensed mobile carriers’ restoration of limited communications capability in areas of Puerto Rico and the United States Virgin Islands affected by Hurricanes Irma and Maria.”

The license is applicable from October 6th until April 4th, 2018. It was granted to Ben Wojtowicz, a software engineer and member of Alphabet’s X lab who is working on Project Loon.
