Horrible news for Samsung fans who expected to see the release of a foldable smartphone by the end of this year or at the beginning of 2018.
Numerous speculations have been launch by various tipsters, but all rumors have been ruled out by a Samsung Display official, even though the company patented a foldable smartphone at the beginning of this year and even registered the “Galaxy X” name, which was expected to be used for this model.
Samsung Display’s principal engineer, Kim Tae-woong, has revealed that foldable phones may not be commercialized until 2019 as there are still technical challenges to be addressed.
“Because the bezel-free display currently sells well, we still have enough time to develop foldable display. The technology is expected to be mature around 2019,” said Kim Tae-woong, Samsung Display’s principal engineer, at Display TechSalon held in Seoul.
In other words, from a business point of view, it’s unwise to launch a more spectacular display than the bezel-free ones since they just have been introduced.
